####################################################################### NOTICE REGARDING DELL OPENMANAGE ARRAY MANAGER AND DELL OPENMANAGE SERVER ADMINISTRATOR STORAGE MANAGEMENT Customers seeking to install Array Manager should be aware of the availability of Dell OpenManage Server Administrator Storage Management. This document describes installation and other considerations for Array Manager and Storage Management. In addition to this document, you should review the Storage Management, Array Manager, and Server Administrator readme files for installation information. ###################################################################### TABLE OF CONTENTS ###################################################################### INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS OPERATING SYSTEM AND FIBRE CHANNEL SUPPORT CONSIDERATIONS WHEN UPGRADING FROM ARRAY MANAGER TO STORAGE MANAGEMENT ###################################################################### INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS ###################################################################### Dell OpenManage Array Manager 3.7 is packaged with Dell OpenManage Server Administrator. You can download Dell OpenManage Server Administrator from http://support.dell.com. Although either Array Manager or Storage Management can be installed using the Server Administrator install process, Dell recommends upgrading to Storage Management. Array Manager is a legacy application that enables you to configure and manage local and remote storage attached to a server. If your system already has Array Manager installed, then you can upgrade to the latest version of Array Manager using Express Setup. Array Manager is also available through Express Setup on NetWare systems. Otherwise, use Custom Setup to install Array Manager. Storage Management provides the same storage management and configuration functions as Array Manager. Unlike Array Manager, however, Storage Management features are accessible from the Server Administrator graphical and command line interfaces. Storage Management also has a fully-featured and scriptable command line interface which is not available in Array Manager. Storage Management supports SCSI, SATA, and ATA and has wizard-driven features for novice and advanced users and detailed online help. Use Express Setup to install Storage Management on a Linux system or a Windows system that does not have Array Manager installed. Use Custom Setup to upgrade an existing Array Manager installation to Storage Management. Storage Management is not currently available on NetWare. ###################################################################### OPERATING SYSTEM AND FIBRE CHANNEL SUPPORT ###################################################################### The following table shows differences in operating system and fibre channel support between Array Manager and Storage Management. ------------------------------------------------- | | ARRAY | STORAGE | | FEATURE | MANAGER | MANAGEMENT | ------------------------------------------------- | RedHat Linux | | | | 32-bit | No | Yes | ------------------------------------------------- | NetWare | Yes | No | ------------------------------------------------- | Windows | | | | 2000 | Yes | Yes | ------------------------------------------------- | Windows Server | | | | 2003 32-bit | Yes | Yes | ------------------------------------------------- | Windows Server | | | | 2003 64-bit | No | Yes | ------------------------------------------------- | Fibre Channel | | | | (Dell PowerVault | | | | 660F Storage | | | | System) | Yes | No | ------------------------------------------------- | Windows Disk and | Yes (see | | | Volume | Array Manager | | | Management | documentation | | | for details) | No | |------------------------------------------------ ###################################################################### CONSIDERATIONS WHEN UPGRADING FROM ARRAY MANAGER TO STORAGE MANAGEMENT ###################################################################### If you replace an existing Array Manager installation with Storage Management, the following migration considerations apply. ====================================================================== VIRTUAL DISK PRESERVATION ====================================================================== You can preserve the virtual disk names when upgrading from Array Manager to Storage Management. To do so, however, you must not uninstall Array Manager prior to installing Storage Management. If Array Manager is uninstalled prior to installing Storage Management, then Storage Management will rename the virtual disks created with Array Manager. Whether or not Array Manager is uninstalled, Storage Management will be able to identify and manage the virtual disks created with Array Manager. ====================================================================== SNMP TRAPS ====================================================================== The architecture for handling the SNMP traps and the Management Information Base (MIB) is different in Storage Management than Array Manager. You may need to modify applications that have been customized to receive SNMP traps from Array Manager. ====================================================================== EVENT NUMBERING ====================================================================== The numbering scheme for Storage Management alerts or events is different than the numbers used for the corresponding Array Manager events. See the Storage Management online help for more information. ###################################################################### Information in this document is subject to change without notice.
