If this agent is not installed, the default network diagnostics are available. Use the "Dell OpenManage Server Assistant" CD (version 8.x) to install Intel PROSet or you can download Intel PROSet from the Dell Support website at “support.dell.com”. Intel PROSet is listed under "Intel PRO Family of Adapters." * The Linux tg3 driver is not supported by Broadcom NIC vendor diagnostics. Install bcm5700 if the Dell Server Assistant CD (version 8.x or later) was not used to install the operating system. * For systems running Windows, Dell OpenManage(TM) Array Manager 3.5 or later is required to diagnose Adaptec RAID-attached hard drives when using PowerEdge Diagnostics. If Array Manager is not installed, the Adaptec RAID-attached hard-drive tests may not function properly. * You must install Dell-qualified device drivers and firmware to run diagnostics on RAID controllers, RAID-attached hard drives, tape drives, tape autoloaders, and tape libraries. See the documentation that accompanied your device for more information, or access the latest drivers and firmware from the Dell Support website at "support.dell.com". A list of the latest drivers and firmware versions for RAID Controllers can be found in the "User's Guide." ###################################################################### SETUP ###################################################################### * For Linux, extract the "tar.gz" package downloaded from "support.dell.com" to the desired directory using "tar --no-same-owner–zxvf ". All of the files required to run the application are extracted to the “Dell” directory. In the “Dell” directory, run "startDiags.sh" to launch the application. * For Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (version 2.1), the following RPMs are required to run Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics. -libgcc-3.0.4-1.i386.rpm -libgcj3-3.0.4-1.i386.rpm -libgcj-2.96-28.i386.rpm * For Windows, launch the "exe" package downloaded from "support.dell.com". Select a directory where you want the extracted files to reside. All of the files needed to run the application are extracted to the selected directory and the application is launched. To run the application later, launch the "StartDiags" shortcut from the extracted directory. ###################################################################### USER NOTES ###################################################################### This section provides information to help enhance your experience with PowerEdge Diagnostics in particular implementations and environments. * For a complete list of hardware devices that Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics supports, see the "Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics User’s Guide.” * PowerEdge Diagnostics provides diagnostics for the following Dell-supplied hardware devices: • CD drives • DVD drives • CD-RW/DVD combination drives • Diskette and LS drives • NICs • Modems • SCSI controllers • RAID controllers - See the list in the User's Guide or refer to the section, "Notes for RAID Controllers" below. • Hard drives • CMOS • Parallel ports • Serial ports • PCI buses • Tape drives- See the list in the "User's Guide" or refer to the section "Notes for Tape Drives, Arrays, Autoloaders, and Libraries" below. • Tape arrays, autoloaders, and libraries - See the specific list in the "User's Guide" or refer to the section "Notes for Tape Drives, Arrays, Autoloaders, and Libraries" below. * To obtain full functionality for all of the supported diagnostics, see the section "Diagnostic Requirements" above. * Do not run diagnostics in parallel on multiple tape devices. In addition, do not run diagnostic tests in parallel with the SCSI communication tests. For example, if you run diagnostic tests simultaneously for a PV122T autoloader and a VS80 tape drive, one of the tests will fail with the following message: “The DLL required to run the diagnostic is currently being used by another device. Retry the diagnostic after ensuring that the DLL is not being used by other devices.” * Do not run tape diagnostics while the system is performing a tape backup. * Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics does not support the PERC 2/SC and may act unpredictably when a PERC 2/SC is present. * Dell strongly recommends that you maintain the latest versions of the RAID controller driver and firmware. Otherwise, unpredictable behavior may occur. For example, when the PERC 3/DI RAID controller firmware is earlier than version 2.7, Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics may not start. * You must have Administrator privileges for your operating system to run diagnostics tests using the PowerEdge Diagnostics. * This application should not be extracted and then copied to another directory to run. Running this application on a read-only file system is also not supported. * The Diagnostic Service is designed to diagnose problems on individual systems. Problems that occur on the network level are not addressed unless the problem resides with a NIC on a single system. * The hard-drive diagnostics are designed to run as a low-priority background task to limit the effect of their activity on other hard-drive I/O activity. It is recommended that you limit drive activity while you are running the hard-drive diagnostics. The diagnostics may run slowly or even stop while other hard-drive I/O activity is running simultaneously. The diagnostics resume when the hard-drive I/O activity has decreased. * The PowerEdge Diagnostics run concurrently with all the other applications that are running on the system being tested. As a result, additional system load will occur that impacts system and application performance. If you are running critical applications that require rapid response or consume significant system resources,take the appropriate precautions before running these diagnostics. Close all nonessential applications and only run diagnostics during nonpeak hours of system use. * Running multiple instances of Dell PowerEge Diagnostics is not supported. ====================================================================== NOTES FOR RAID CONTROLLERS ====================================================================== NOTE: You must install Dell-qualified device drivers and firmware to run diagnostics on RAID controllers and RAID-attached hard drives. Supported Tape Drives: • PowerVault(TM) 100T Travan TR-5/Travan 40 (IDE tape drives) (Not supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux) • PowerVault 100T DDS4 (Not supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (version 3)) • PowerVault 100T DAT72 (Not supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (version 3)) • PowerVault 110T DLT1 • PowerVault 110T VS80 • PowerVault 110T SDLT220 • PowerVault 110T VS160 • PowerVault 110T SDLT320 • All drives in supported arrays, autoloaders, and libraries • Supported arrays, autoloaders, and libraries: - PowerVault 122T VS80 - PowerVault 122T SDLT320 - PowerVault 128T SDLT320 (supports diagnostics for tape drives only) - PowerVault 132T SDLT320 - PowerVault 136T SDLT220 (supports diagnostics for tape drives only) - PowerVault 136T SDLT320 (supports diagnostics for tape drives only) ###################################################################### KNOWN ISSUES ###################################################################### The following subsections list the known issues with this release of Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ISSUES FOR ALL OPERATING SYSTEMS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * When you run tests, do not update the NIC drivers, or the tests may give unexpected results. * If a network adapter is disabled and then enabled, or if diagnostics are run and Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics is restarted, the NICs may not be available in the “Select Test(s) to Run” tree. It takes approximately 30 seconds for the adapter to return to an active state. If you start PowerEdge Diagnostics immediately after one of these situations, the diagnostic tests will not be listed. The workaround is to wait approximately 30 seconds before you start Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics. * When you disconnect the USB cable while you are running a diskette test on a USB diskette drive, unexpected results can occur. On systems running the Red Hat Enterprise Linux products, this may cause the operating system to stop responding. On systems running Windows, the test may never complete. * Parallel port diagnostics support only base address 0x378h. * Diagnostics may report a write-failure, when you run the Format Diagnostic Tape test with new media. If this error occurs, run the test again. * If you are using a Mozilla browser to view the result and configuration XML files created by the Save Configuration or Save Results option, the corners of the HTML file may be distorted. * In versions of the Mozilla browser that are earlier than 1.2, the HTML file generated from the XML file may not be viewable at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ISSUES FOR WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * If a version of the Yosemite Tapeware application earlier than 7.0 is installed on your system, the Diagnostic Service cannot discover and run diagnostics on IDE tape drives. To correct this problem, perform the following steps: 1. Locate the TapeWare configuration file. The default location is "C:\Program Files\TapeWare\TapeWare.ini". 2. Find the "Configuration" section in the file. 3. Add the following line to the "Configuration" section. releaseWhenUnused=Yes 4. Save the "TapeWare.ini" file, and reboot the system. * After running PowerEdge Diagnostics, the following errors are logged in the Event Viewer System Log by the Removable Storage Service. "Type: Error, Source: DCOM" "Type: Error, Source: Removable Storage Service" These entries are logged because the PowerEdge Diagnostics must stop the Removable Storage Service to scan the system for tape devices on which to perform diagnostics. After performing the scan, the Removable Storage Service is restarted. * Diagnostics may display PERC cards and any attached devices even if Array Manager is not installed. When this occurs, it displays some valid and some invalid messages when you run tests on the RAID-attached device. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ISSUES FOR RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX OPERATING SYSTEMS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * On Red Hat Enterprise Linux (version 3), after you select a test to run in the “Select Test(s) to Run” tree, the tab in the Diagnostic Information section does not automatically change to the “Tests Selected” tab. You must manually go to the “Tests Selected” tab to run the diagnostic tests. * On RedHat Enterprise Linux (version 2.1), the scroll bar on the Status tab will not function properly the first time diagnostics are run. You can use the keyboard to scroll down on the "Status" tab to view the status of all tests selected to run. You can also maximize the UI to correct the problem. * For Intel network adapters, the "Additional Information" device attribute field listed in the "Configuration" tab may display invalid PCI Slot information. ###################################################################### Information in this document is subject to change without notice.
